There Goes Another Millennium
The year 2000 and Y2K images of the future
I’m giving a series of art talks in the high desert looking at what were, or are, bleeding edge ideas and technique.
The Present Age
Moholy-Nagy and visual experiments in Texas
There Goes Another Millennium
The year 2000 and Y2K images of the future
Truly Human Technology
Sculptures of light from MIT to Corpus Christi
Fantastic Border
Planned cities and structures that never happened
For There Goes Another Millennium I trace the image and aesthetics of “the future” in popular culture against the backdrop of the dramatic and looming Y2K Bug, or Year 2000 Problem. This was the moment where society and our systems were supposed to collapse in anticipation of a computer-induced apocalypse —caused by the digits on clocks no less.
The future was increasingly pressing and present!
It will be my pleasure to share with a small group a little about this moment, contrast nostalgic futures and obsolete high technology, culture and aesthetics, and make my case that the future is a psychological landscape.
We will also notice present-day doomers and preppers and open up a dialogue basically asking, hey, what’s up with that?
I’ll share a lot of fashion from my time working in that space in Italy in the late 90s, and we’ll notice who, back then, was early to tech-enabled accessories and clothing. Welcome along!
Presentation is in person, salon style, at the office next to St James' on N 6th. Please share if you're so moved to.
